Rakkauden keidas - Paradise (Blu-ray) 1982 (Phoebe Cates, Willie Aames)

Extended version

4K masteroitu!

Englantilainen tyttö (Sarah) ja hänen palvelijansa (Geoffrey) tapaavat amerikkalaisen papin ja tämän vaimon ja pojan (David) Bagdadin markkinoilla 1823. He liittyvät yhdessä Damaskukseen lähtevän karavaanin matkaan.

"If only it could have been forever." Romance and adventure abound in this lyrical story of two teenagers who come of age in the isolation of a lush desert oasis.

In the nineteenth century Middle East, David (Willie Aames, ZAPPED) and Sarah (Phoebe Cates, FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH) are the only survivors of a caravan massacre carried out by an infamous slave trader known as the Jackal (Tuvia Tavi, SAHARA), who is obsessed with Sarah's beauty. Fleeing the Jackal, they stumble on a magical place they will come to know as "Paradise," where they discover refuge, sustenance...and each other.

PARADISE was shot on picturesque locations across Israel by cinematographer Adam Greenberg, whose impressive credits include the TERMINATOR films, NEAR DARK and THE BIG RED ONE. Notable as the screen debut of Phoebe Cates, the film built a sizable audience via pay cable and videocassette distribution. Out of circulation for decades, PARADISE is available for the first time on Blu-ray, in a new 4K restoration from its original 35mm camera negative. This version contains several minutes of never-before-seen footage, as well as the chart-topping theme song sung by Phoebe Cates.

Review:

Inspired as much by Henry De Vere Stacpoole’s novel The Blue Lagoon as much by the 1980 film of the same name, Paradise is very much a sex-positive coming of age historical adventure with gorgeous Israeli filming locations and a stunning 17 year-old Cates, who engages in a bunch of nude and sex scenes with her co-star. I prefer Paradise to The Blue Lagoon simply because I grew up watching this one over the other film, and I remember it being on cable on rotation throughout the early 1980s. What it doesn’t have is a superior score by Basil Poledouris, but its composer Paul Hoffert did a commendable job anyway. Cates herself sings the title song at the end, and the movie, despite its horndog and leery gaze, somehow managed to feel genteel and innocent, but that was just the ’80s. Stuart Gillard wrote and directed.

After more than 25 years of being unavailable on home video other than on VHS (which I can finally retire or keep as a relic), Paradise finds its way to a permium Blu-ray release from Fun City Editions. The film has never looked better in a nicely restored transfer, and the special features are appreciated for fans of the film. High marks all around for this release.
