Tarvittiin neljä miestä. Neljä miestä, jotka olivat valmiita ajamaan hengenvaarallista kuormaa halki tulen ja veden. Niitä, jotka uskalsivat ja uskoivat selviävänsä, odotti menolippu vapauteen. Heidät valittiin satojen ilmoittautuneiden joukosta. He olivat Kassem – Interpolin etsintäkuuluttama terroristi, Victor – joka oli piileskellyt 20-vuotista vankeusrangaistusta, Jackie – mafian tuomitsema mies ja Nilo-mies joka pakeni aina.
Nämä neljä miestä olivat kyllin epätoivoisia lähteäkseen vapaaehtoisesti ajamaan kahta nitroglyseriinillä lastattua autoa palavalle öljynporaustornille. Heidän edessään oli 50 km viidakkoa, kapeita arvaamattomia vuoristopolkuja, luhistumaisillaan olevia siltoja, tulvivia jokia ja trooppisia myrskyjä. Takana oli heidän menneisyytensä. Siksi heillä oli vain yksi suunta – eteenpäin.

In a remote Latin American village, four desperate fugitives—a New Jersey gangster (Roy Scheider), a Mexican assassin (Francisco Rabal), an unscrupulous Parisian businessman (Bruno Cremer), and an Arab fanatic (Amidou)—take on a seemingly doomed mission: transporting two trucks full of highly explosive nitroglycerin through the treacherous jungle. Aided by Tangerine Dream’s otherworldly synth score, Friedkin turns each bump in the road into a tour de force of cold-sweat tension—conjuring a hauntingly nihilistic vision of a world ruled by chance and fate.
